2025 Seasonal Field Botanist in Northern California (Modoc National Forest)
The main objectives of this position include field data collection while conducting floristic surveys, rare plant inventories, noxious weed surveys and general special status plant habitat monitoring. Identification of plants using dichotomous keys are highly desirable for this position. The work requires safe navigation using GPS and topographic maps, operating 4-wheel drive vehicles on backcountry roads and must possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license. Physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, steep, rocky surfaces with recurring stooping, reaching, or bending and lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds is required. Housing in barracks is potentially available at government rates. Funding available for roughly six months, GS-7 based on experience. Seed Collection Technician (Multiple Locations)
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), and Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is recruiting up to 6 seed collection crew members for crews based in locations across California. Under the direction of the National Park Service, the selected candidates will implement the Seeds of Success (SOS) seed collection protocol on participating Department of the Interior (DOI) Lands, which may include NPS, FWS, and/or BLM lands. Locations include the Consumnes River Preserve, the Redding area, and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. See link for more details.

Fisheries Technician - Restoration Monitoring

Work involves travel to project sites (often remote) located in watersheds throughout coastal areas of northern California, and car camping for up to four days per week. Monitoring of restoration projects employs three approaches: 1) detailed measurement of physical habitat characteristics, including stream longitudinal profiles; 2) a rapid field assessment using treatment-specific, qualitative checklists; and 3) assessment of fish response to instream and passage projects via snorkel and spawner surveys.
